You might think that this is a photograph of a woman spending time with her cat outdoors, but this brown and white cat is a stray, who patiently waits for his friend to visit. I’ve nicknamed this cat “Curly Tail” because of its distinctive spiral tail.
Curly Tail is one of several cats who live near a canal in Kawasaki, Japan. They are chiki neko, community cats, and are fed and cared for by neighbors.
I’ll post more photos of Curly Tail and the other canal cats in another newsletter.
My other Substack newsletter is Fiction by Bill Adler, a biweekly short story publication. I’d be delighted if you subscribed.
Stray Cats of Japan is a photo newsletter featuring images of Japan’s stray cats, which I publish whenever a cute kitty crosses in front of my camera’s lens. I hope you enjoy these photographs.
So many stray cats in Japan, so glad they're looked after
I was reading with an orange cat seated on my right arm, purring vigorously, until the typing of this comment annoyed him. He has gone to find a more restful spot. So much for neko greeting neko.
